Square Shelving: vinyl bookcase for audiophiles
While I am keen on keeping my belongings to a minimum, my partner is very much into collecting various things like pins, books and records. I remember when he first moved out to Minneapolis, his records sat in a pile on the floor. This spurred our search for a more permanent solution for organizing them.
I had seen that some people used milk crates to tote them around but I wanted something a bit more sophisticated. One day we stopped in a local record shop and asked for shelving suggestions. They said that furniture specifically designed for records was expensive and instead recommended a set of IKEA book shelves called Expedit that they used for their store. Not only are the units perfect for holding records, they are relatively inexpensive and come in different shapes and colors (black, white and tan).
Here is the pricing for two of the configurations
2 x 2 square is $40
2 x 8 rectangle is $70
Purchasing a few legs to put on the bottom of the unit helped lift it off the floor and the top of the shelf was perfect for housing the receiver, speakers and turntable. Another benefit is that unused shelving compartments can be filled with picture frames, storage containers or other objects for display.

how do i purchase a 2×2?
Hi Ruben,
You would have to go to an IKEA store and pick it up there. The assembly is pretty straightforward but if you decide to add the legs it is a bit trickier.
